5 Power Yoga Poses to use Before Your Next Interview

Have you ever wondered how you could be more assertive or confident in your upcoming job interview or presentation? The findings of Chapman University of fears survey concluded that overall public speaking is America’s biggest phobia (Ingraham, 2014). But don’t worry, Grow Mobile Yoga Community, we have five yoga poses, which can help alleviate the stress and worry beforehand!

Non-verbal behaviors are also languages that communicate how you may be feeling at the moment. According to Amy Cuddy’s ted talk: “Your body language may shape who you are,” employers can make sweeping judgments and inference from body language (TED Global, 2012). Those first judgments/impressions tend to predict if you will be hired or not. We’ve taken Amy’s advice and implemented our own version, combining the benefits of yoga with the benefits of power posing. Try our favorite yoga poses for empowerment:

Warrior I :

Benefits: Not only does this pose energize your whole body, it overall improves your balance, stability and focus (CNY Healing Arts, 2011).

Warrior II:

Benefits: Improves your circulation and respiration while also allowing your body to build concentration and stamina (CNY Healing Arts, 2011).

Upward Facing Dog:

Benefits: Improves your posture which is essential to start off that first impression/interview. While also stretching your shoulders, and chest to relieve tension we tend to carry (CNY Healing Arts, 2011).

Five Pointed Star Pose:

Benefits: Improves overall alignment, and balance of your body, while also stretching your arms and legs (CNY Healing Arts, 2011).

Tree Pose:

Benefits: To sum it all up the tree pose will stretch your thighs, torso and shoulders. This will also allow for you to build strength in your calves and ankles (CNY Healing Arts, 2011).

These yoga stances will allow you to manipulate your physique to allow your mind and body to radiate with confidence and power (Zavala et al., 2011)! Before walking into that interview, allow yourself to practice these yoga stances in the comfort of your home. However, if you're reading this in the bathroom stall (with limited space) of the building, we highly recommend you try the Warrior I and Tree Pose and maybe add the wonder woman power pose while you're at it!

In Amy Cuddy's ted talk, she describes how animals tend to expand their bodies to show dominance and power (TED Global, 2012). It is also how a male animal tends to attract its mate! Funny enough us humans tend to do these nonverbal expressions of power and dominance (TED Global, 2012). When was the last time you won a competition, can you recall what your physical reaction was? Most likely, it was raising your hands in the air and feeling powerful at that moment!

If you are not so great at giving yourself a pep talk before any job interview or presentation, give these yoga poses a try, we assure you will walk into that door embodying confidence and power!

We are sending power to you!
